A Continental European tureen from the Jugendstil / Art Nouveau design period of the early 1900s. The substantial antique tureen is crafted from darkly patinated pewter and although decorative overall, the sculptural lobster finial distinguishes and elevates the design in the manner of art metal firms of the period, including Kayserzinn, Osiris, and Urania. The handles on either side of the body resemble intertwining plant stems accenting lily blossoms, leaves and rivulets of water surrounding the bowl. The tureen rests atop an elevated foot that flares outward with a ruffled edge that mimics the wavy edge of the lid. The fitted lid features a slot on one side for a ladle. Although likely crafted for serving soup, the decor suggests the design could be filled with ice for the presentation and service of seafood.
The antique tureen was likely silver-plated, as there are traces of silver on the insides, underfoot, and in a few crevices of the decor. Good condition overall with some pitting and wear inside the body and lid. Apparently unmarked, the tureen is substantial at well over 5 lbs, measuring 12 in. wide (from handle to handle) x 9.5 in. height (to top of handle).
